Pink, Me and Tai Qi

Pink, Tai Qi and Me

I’ve never been a wild crazy rock star fan, well not in my youth at least.

But times are changing and I’m finding myself interested more than ever before.

Pink in Concert, August 2018, Sydney

Pink, aka Alecia Moore, has been getting my attention over the years, especially since she became a mum. She’s got two kids, Willow who is now seven and Jameson who is not yet two.

What I find striking about her is her Qi. This lady has so much of it, it’s unbelievable.

I saw her sing live this month in Sydney on August 4. And not just sing – she was hanging upside down, doing flips mid-air and belting out incredible tunes.

You would not have thought she had postponed her concert just one day earlier – and, I would find out later, she also postponed the night afterwards. She was apparently not in a good way. We were the lucky ones to even see her and you wouldn’t have known she was amongst all that illness.

If that’s Pink on a bad day…

I did think about tweeting her to say I’d give her some acupuncture but I know that if she took me up on my offer, I would have told her she needed to stop, rest and to look after herself. So…. I didn’t tweet!

I tell you this story because I think it’s important to know yourself and what your own reserves are. She is one strong lady with incredible reserves and she also does look after herself.

As a midwife, you’re on in such a big way for the women in your care, shift after shift. You’re the person people (especially women) are going to remember for such a long time. You’re that important. So it’s super important to look after yourself.

Trying Tai Qi for the First Time

Last night I took my first Tai Qi (AKA Tai Chi) class. Yep – first time.

When I was studying in China I loved getting up at the crack of dawn to watch hundreds – and I mean hundreds – of men and women doing their Tai Qi routine. It’s beautiful and almost mesmerising to watch.

I am a yoga teacher, but haven’t taught in quite a while, but I totally got into yoga for a long time.

I’ve been a meditator on and off for the last 20 years, which I still do love.

I’ve had times when I’ve been immersed in Qi Gong.

I’ve tried Pilates and a pinch of the gym many many moons ago (not for me).

But I’ve been feeling like I need something new.

So last night I took myself off to my first Tai Qi lesson. Why? Because self-preservation is important. Even more when you’re a practitioner or in a profession where you’re in the service of others. The motherhood thing falls into this camp too.

So I did it and loved it. There’s something about moving my body slowly and with precision and with focus that meant I was turning on my core, I was really in the present moment and I felt at ease and calm.

I have to say I love that there is no mat, no props, no special clothes… it’s just me and some space in time.

What helps you to stay calm? What gives back to you? And how amazing is Pink?!
