Midwives, Doulas and Birth Workers: Are You Exhausted?

woman sleeping in meadowFeel like you’re running on empty? We’re not surprised! Spending so much energy caring for others can do that do a lady. When you’re a midwife, doula or birth worker, your work involves such high levels of caring, and often home life is similarly demanding. We get that.

So when is there time for you?

Here’s a little secret: that energy you put into caring for others time and time again is a finite resource. It needs to be topped up, otherwise you’ll end up out of balance.

Chinese medicine is all about balance. You know that Yin and Yang symbol? It pretty much sums up everything. So if you’re expending huge efforts in caring for others all the time (you give so selflessly, we see it every day), it means you’ve got lots of energy in the white swishy part of the symbol – the Yang, and not so much in the Yin.

Yin YangWhen there isn’t very much of you in the Yin, you start to feel imbalanced, your skin can be dry as there’s not enough blood to nourish it, your hair may not feel strong or shiny, you find yourself coming down with the latest bug and you just can’t make it to the end of the day without dreaming of a nap. That’s your body saying hey, there’s too much Yang going on here… you’re out of whack, lady!

If you can have a nap, you should!

Having a nap between the hours of 11am and 1pm is actually wonderful for your Yin – for you, for your insides and for your health. It’s one of the best things you can do and will actually promote good sleep in the night time.

When you’re tending to pregnant mummas all through the night, your Yin will become drained, so midday naps are even more important.

How else to improve your Yin?

Ditch the sugar (and coffee if you can hack it). Drink bone broth – yep – that slow-cooked stuff is gold for your system. You can buy it if you don’t feel you have time to cook it or just get a slow cooker – they’re so cheap and so easy to use, and they just do the work for you without complaint. The ultimate kitchen assistant!
