International Day of the Midwife 2016 – Why We Love Midwives

As a bunch of women, midwives are some of the most down-to-earth, salt-of-the-earth people you will ever meet.

Midwives have an important job. They touch women’s lives when they’re at their most vulnerable. Birth rocks all of us in different ways and makes us mothers. And midwives are the ones who are by our side lighting the way. It’s a tough job and not for the faint hearted.

Birth is a tricky business. Having been through it myself I feel I can say this with conviction: it’s a time when you feel the intensity of life and how close life is to death.

Yes there are lots of problems with our health care system which don’t always allow midwives to do what they’d like to do for the women in their care, but I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate midwives as the International Day of the Midwife 2016 approaches.

International Day of the Midwife 2016 - why we love midwives

It truly is a vocation to work so tirelessly for other women, often all through the night, to help bring their new babes into the world. Midwives are there to answer your questions when you’re pregnant, they are there to soothe and reassure you through labour and they are there on the other side to help with the tricky art of breastfeeding.

We love to support midwives because through their work, we are playing a role in supporting other mothers. Midwives are a treasure and we want to say, thank you.

This year on May 5, Rebecca Mar Young will be speaking at the International Day of the Midwife 2016 conference – Building Bridges. We’d love to see you there!
